columns
The column is the generative organ of the orchid flower. It originates from the adnation between style and stamen. In the past its structure was the main character for the distinction between the orchid genera. The column is a very important organ, because its form and function determines how the pollinia are attached to a visiting insect. In various cases the flower morphology is adapted to self-fertilisation (autogamy).
